CNC terms used in ForgeCNC

A short reference for coordinate frames and workflow language.

Step by step

  1. Machine coordinates: positions measured from the machine's established home reference. Work coordinates: positions relative to the selected part datum.
  2. Datum / work zero: the origin of the CAM programme. WCS: one of G54–G59, each storing its own work offset. A fixture square locates stock against an inner corner.
  3. Stock: the starting blank. Toolpath: the programmed cutter route. Rapid: a positioning move, which still needs a clear route.
  4. Preflight: checks of the current job and setup. Air run: a reviewed machine route intended to check clearance before cutting.
  5. Tool-length compensation: the relationship between an axis reference and the actual fitted cutter. Probe: a contact measurement. Fixed setter: a stationary tool measurement device.
  6. Trusted position: a controller reference established for the current connection. Recovery: a fresh verification and continuation workflow after interruption.
